Germany: 6% More Road Traffic Deaths In 2017

1,536 people have died in road traffic accidents in the first half of 2017 on German streets. The figures of the Federal Statistics Office (Destatis) show a 6.2% increase (90 more deaths) compared to the first half of 2016. The number of injured decreased by 0.2% to approximately 183,900 people injured in road crashes.

Die number of road traffic fatalities was especially high in the month of June, compared to one year ago. 317 were killed in June, 2017, which is 58 more deaths, or a 22.4% increase compared to June 2016.

In total, the number of accidents increased by 2.7% to approximately 1.28 million crashes. In 142,800 of these crashes people were injured or killed, which is an increase to last year by 0.1%.

In Germany, driving under the influence of alcohol is one of the main causes of traffic accidents. And driving under the influence of alcohol causes more severe crashes with graver consequences than average accidents on German streets.
