1st WHO Africa Health Forum

The WHO Regional Office for Africa (AFRO) is convening the first ever Africa Health Forum in Kigali, Rwanda June 27 to 26, 2017. The two-day event addresses the challenges and opportunities for effective health service delivery and policy priorities across Africa.

Theme

“Putting People First: The Road to Universal Health Coverage in Africa”

The Forum will cover WHO AFRO’s vision for health and development across the continent including how to improve health security, progress towards equity and Universal Health Coverage (UHC), and the unfinished agenda of communicable diseases while exploring the new Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) targets.

The forum looks to address the following objectives:

  • Provide a platform to discuss innovative strategieson persistent challenges in public health in the African Region;
  • Promote reinforced country ownership and governance for health; and
  • Explore concrete ways for partners to contribute in reforming the work of WHO in the African Region and fulfill the aims of the Africa Health Transformation Programme 2015-2020;

Strategic partnerships, effective engagement and coordinated joint action will ultimately result in effectively addressing the urgent and ever changing health needs of people living on the African continent. The Forum is a unique opportunity to strengthen collaboration between WHO and its stakeholders on Africa’s health agenda.

It will facilitate engagement with all partners to kick start new partnerships for improving the health of Africans across the region.

Who will participate?

As well as WHO AFRO’s traditional stakeholders, the forum will host new regional and global health players. The focus on educating and engaging the youth is of particular importance.

Participants will include African leaders, ministers of health and finance, UN agencies, intergovernmental agencies, academics, civil society, philanthropic foundations, private sector, and youth organisations.

As the technical agency and custodian of public health in Africa, the regional office seeks to galvanise political commitment, foster collaboration and align strategic priorities in advancing the health agenda in the region, especially around the Sustainable Development Goals.
