Background

The Alcohol & Society report series is an international research initiative led by senior experts in public health and medicine. For more than a decade, the series has provided independent, science-based evidence on alcohol and health to inform public policy.

The 2026 edition “Binge Drinking: Acute Consequences and Lasting Impacts” is the 13th report in the series. It focuses on episodic heavy alcohol use and its disproportionate contribution to alcohol harm, including injuries, violence, alcohol poisoning, liver disease, and long-term health conditions.

Binge alcohol use remains a major public health challenge in Europe, with significant social and economic costs. The report provides timely evidence to inform debates on alcohol prevention, health equity, and evidence-based policy action at the EU level.

Objectives

  1. Present key findings from the 2026 Alcohol & Society research report
  2. Examine the acute and long-term harms due to binge alcohol use
  3. Discuss how evidence can inform effective alcohol prevention and public policy responses in Europe
  4. Foster dialogue between policymakers, researchers, civil society, and journalists

Why Attend?

Binge alcohol use has severe consequences that are medical, social, and political.
The 2026 research report “Binge drinking – acute consequences and lasting impacts” sheds light on how heavy alcohol consumption affects individuals, communities, and health systems across Europe. The launch brings together research, policy perspectives, and civil society voices to discuss what effective prevention looks like – and how the EU can act to prevent avoidable harm.

Why this matters

Evidence shows that binge drinking causes a disproportionate share of alcohol-related harm, even among people who do not identify as having alcohol problems. Population-level alcohol policies, such as pricing, availability restrictions, and marketing regulations, are effective in reducing binge drinking and preventing long-term health consequences.

This event connects research evidence with policy discussion, supporting stronger alcohol prevention action in Europe.
