Alcohol and Cancer. What’s at Stake in Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan?

IOGT-NTO, the European Alcohol Policy Alliance, the Association of European Cancer Leagues and United European Gastroenterology are jointly arranging a webinar, hosted by Jytte Guteland MEP and First Vice-President of the European Parliament, Mairead McGuinness MEP, in cooperation with the organisers.

Alcohol and Cancer – What’s at stake in Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan?

Date: September 22, 2020.

Time: 10.00-11.15 AM

Concept

Every day in EU+ countries, around 800 people die from alcohol attributable causes and the main cause of these deaths (29%) is cancer. According to Eurobarometer findings from 2010, one in five Europeans did not believe there was an association between alcohol use and cancers, and roughly one in ten did not know of a link.

The webinar will examine how Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan can strengthen EU and Member State capacity to prevent alcohol-related cancer. It will ask what needs to be done to raise awareness about the link between alcohol and cancer, how the EU can lead by example when it comes to action against alcohol-related harm and which objectives and instruments could be put forward in Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan to reduce the prevalence of alcohol-related cancers.

Speakers

Speakers include Mairead McGuinness MEP, First Vice-President of the European Parliament, Jytte Guteland MEP, Coordinator in the European Parliament Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety, a representative of the European Commission, two medical doctors working on alcohol-attributable cancers, alcohol use disorders and public health, a representative giving a perspective on the national Irish measures on alcohol and cancer, as well as a representative from a European cancer organisation.
