“Half of Brazilians consume alcohol and 1 in 5 admit to overdoing it, survey shows”
“The survey pointed out that consumption is still more prevalent among men: 58% of them consume alcoholic beverages, compared to 42% of women. In addition, they also drink more often: 10% of men drink three to seven days a week, an index that drops to 2% among women.
Research shows, however, that the prevalence of women who drink has been increasing over the years. Data from the latest report Alcohol and the Health of Brazilians based on Vigitel show that non-abusive alcohol consumption by women rose from 16.5% to 22.8% between 2010 and 2023. The abusive pattern rose from 10.5% to 15.2% in the same period.”

Assessment:
While one in five Brazilians reported “overdoing it,” and 11% said they “drink more than they should,” these overlapping admissions reflect a broad public concern of alcohol harm. This growing recognition – even without clinical language – strengthens the case for ambitious government action when it comes to alcohol taxes and other alcohol policy measures.
