The third biggest cause of deaths in Sri Lanka is strokes, the Health Services of Sri Lanka say. Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) are one of the main health issues in Sri Lanka.

Heart disease, strokes, diabetes and chronic respiratory diseases are the main NCDs affecting the country. The three main factors causing NCDs are

  1. Unhealthy food habits which encourage people to have food with excessive sugar, salt and fats,
  2. Insufficient physical activity and
  3. Tobacco and alcohol use.

Consumption of alcohol is a risk factor for stroke, evidence shows.
