Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto has decided not to attend the United Nations General Assembly Special Session (UNGASS) on drugs. UNGASS is a three-day special session to address the world drug problem, held at the UN Headquarters in New York next week. The session’s goal is the development of an integrated and balanced strategy to counter the world drug problem.

IOGT International has been continuously contributing to the preparations of UNGASS and to the broader advocacy for preventing and reducing the global burden of narcotic drugs.

In 2012 Mexico joined the governments of Colombia and Guatemala in calling for a special session on drugs at the UN – effectively bringing it forward from its original date in 2019.

The Mexican delegation to the UN General Assembly will now be headed by foreign minister Claudia Ruiz Massieu who spoke to reporters about UNGASS while accompanying the president on a tour of Germany this week.

Mexico will be at the General Assembly like all the other countries,” Ruiz Massieu said. “Mexico will make its position known with firmness and lots of clarity.”
