Mongolia is facing serious economical difficulties. Therefore, the Mongolian Parliament has approved austerity measures, which involve an increase in alcohol and tobacco taxation.

The austerity measures also address the salaries of senior government officials being reduced by 30%. Overall 256 senior government officials, including President and MPs will take pay cuts from September 1, 2016.

The alcohol and tobacco taxes are set to increase by 20% – in an attempt to increase revenue and to better protect public health and sustainable development.
