Chiefs ban alcohol sales on Vanuatu’s Mystery Island
In the Republic of Vanuatu the custom chiefs on the island of Aneityum have put a permanent ban on the sale of alcohol on neighbouring Mystery Island which has a booming tourism industry.
The spokesman for the tourist market on Mystery Island, Makoya Ben, said the chiefs were adamant no alcohol would be sold on the island after they experienced its negative impact on young people.
Vanuatu is a Pacific island nation located in the South Pacific Ocean. The archipelago is situated east of northern Australia. The country has an annual abstainer rate of 68%. But frequently tourists’ alcohol consumption is cause of concern.
