Studying Links Between Alcohol Policy and Homelessness

Glasgow Caledonian University will lead a study looking at the impact of alcohol minimum unit pricing on the homeless.

In May 2018, Scotland became the first country to introduce minimum unit pricing (MUP) on alcohol. Since then the country’s alcohol consumption has hit a 10 year low indicating substantial improvement in public health.

Scotland: Alcohol Sales at Lowest Level in 25 years

The researchers along with experts from three universities, including the University of Victoria in Canada will explore how the legislation has affected alcohol users since it came into force.

The study will also be supported by experts from NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC), The Homeless Network, Stirling University and Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh.

The researchers will be specifically looking into how the policy has affected homeless people.

The study aims to inform decisions on MUP policy in Scotland as well as provide guidance for other countries hoping to implement MUP.
