With 170+ years of advocacy experience, Movendi International is the global voice for comprehensive and sustainable solutions to some of the world’s most complex challenges – from health and development to human rights and economic justice.
Our advocacy is from people and for people: we amplify lived experiences, respond to communities’ needs, and channel people’s strong support for change into effective alcohol policy advocacy action.
Movendi’s Advocacy
For us, advocacy is the process of building political will, commitment, and collective action for evidence-based alcohol policy change. It means:
- Putting an issue on the agenda,
- Offering solutions,
- Building support for change, and
- Raising public awareness about both the problem and the solution.
In short: advocacy makes problems visible, solutions possible, and action inevitable.
Five Elements of Successful, Values-Based Advocacy
Our approach to advocacy is rooted in values and focused on impact. The five elements are:
- Lead with values – put shared concerns and aspirations at the center. Frame the story starting with what matters to people, connecting advocacy to their priorities and lived realities.
- Social norming and social license – show that people are concerned and want change. Highlight broad public support for alcohol policy action.
- Reasons to act – explain the scale of harm and costs, the price of inaction, and the benefits of proven solutions that work for everyone.
- Show that action makes a difference – identify who causes harm and how (and why they do that), and demonstrate that concrete solutions can hold them accountable and improve the situation.
- We can have nice things – alcohol policy action benefits everyone and helps improve people’s lives, strengthen communities, and build fairer societies.
At its core, advocacy means telling the truth about who causes harm, why change is needed, and how solutions deliver a better future for all.
