Alcohol industry strategies - through marketing, availability, and cultural embedding - position alcohol as a gatekeeper of participation and direct attention away from the structural drivers of harm. Understanding how the alcohol norm operates creates the conditions to replace it with social norms rooted in inclusion, dignity, safety, and people’s real preferences.
