HRIDAY, a Movendi International member organization, conducted their fourth Global Youth Meet (GYM) from April 20 – 21, 2021. The GYM this year was held virtually. HRIDAY’s heart-driven work with the GYM recognizes the immense potential that young people hold in changing their future and the world for the better.
This year’s GYM was organized in collaboration with the World Health Organization Regional Office for South-East Asia.

Young people are the future of the world. By 2050, the global youth demographic is expected to reach 1.4 billion. Yet, prominent social concerns that impact young people disproportionately such as inequality, growing disease burden including NCDs, poverty, injustice, lack of opportunity, and others are often overlooked and ignored. But youth-focused interventions, programs, and strategies can help to change the current socio-economic, environmental, and political aspect of the non-communicable diseases (NCDs) epidemic.

In this context, HRIDAY organizes the GYM to recognize the youth potential and to help promote youth focused interventions, programs, and strategies – developed by youth for youth. The GYM started in 2006 and has so far been held three successful Meets since its inception.

HRIDAY is a member organization of Movendi International.

The theme of this year’s GYM was “Meaningful Youth Engagement for Leading Action on Universal Health Coverage and Sustainable Development Goals”

GYM 2021,

  • Convened youth delegates, virtually, to explore linkages between key public health issues including communicable diseases, NCDs, and common risk factors such as alcohol as well as environmental and mental health, within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and universal health coverage; and
  • Strengthened the capacity of youth leaders, to hone their skills to plan, implement, monitor and scale-up integrated campaigns to meet their national NCD targets and accelerate action for SDGs.

Movendi International supported the GYM 2021 by providing a dedicated workshop for and with young leaders about how the products and practices of the alcohol industry undermine sustainable development – and what to do about, how to campaign for alcohol prevention and how to expose and counter Big Alcohol.
