Background

Cancer due to alcohol affects millions of people every year but the alcohol industry keeps people in the dark about the fact their products cause 7 types of cancer. People and communities demand urgent action to prevent more cancer cases and effective policy solutions.

And in 2023 both policy and scientific developments advanced the public conversation about the carcinogenic effects of alcohol products. A great example is the WHO statement on alcohol and cancer and the risks linked to low-dose alcohol use. Another remarkable example is the new code against cancer for Latin America and the Caribbean. Another excellent example is the imminent introduction of cancer warning labels on alcohol products in Norway and Ireland.
But major challenges remain: lack of awareness among the public that the products of alcohol companies cause 7 types of cancer and lack of political action to protect people from alcohol’s carcinogenic effects.

Event description

There is a pressing need for more community action to increase recognition of and political action about the link between alcohol and cancer. The fact that the alcohol industry still manages to keep most people in the dark about the fact that their products cause seven different types of cancer underscores the importance of community action.

In 2023, we have seen some inspiring examples in different parts of the world, where communities take action, based on latest science, to advance to public and political discourse about alcohol and cancer.

In a timely event for World Cancer Day 2024, Movendi International, our member and partner organizations, and the wider community come together to share experiences and discuss those inspiring examples of community action to tackle the alcohol-cancer link.

During this session, we aim to spotlight successful experiences from Movendi International members  and partners who have actively engaged in advocating for alcohol policy, driving political change, and making significant contributions to cancer prevention.

With this event, we will provide space for all our members to hear about some successful community-driven initiatives not only raise awareness about the link between alcohol and cancer but also fervently advocate for alcohol policy changes and drive impactful political transformations.

We aim to underscore how communities have effectively championed for alcohol policy and driven political changes, aligning with the overarching principles of the “Be Loud for Change” campaign.
