How to talk about alcohol – Disrupting the alcohol norm and using effective framing to reach more people

Every month, Movendi International invites all members for an online capacity building and exchange webinar and virtual discussion on key topics.

Conversations surrounding alcohol are often influenced by prevailing societal norms and media discourse. This webinar aims to explore strategies for disrupting the alcohol norm through effective framing techniques. By examining industry-friendly media discourse, critiquing narratives perpetuating the alcohol norm, and identifying impactful language and frames, we will offer a space to gain valuable insights into reshaping discussions about alcohol.
In addition to the key presentations, the webinar will feature insights from Movendi International member organizations to share their expertise and experience in disrupting the alcohol norm through effective communication strategies.

Purpose

The purpose of this members’ webinar is to:

  1. Critically analysis of industry-friendly media discourse on alcohol to understand its influence on public perceptions
  2. Identify and critique narratives perpetuating alcohol norm
  3. Explore effective language and framing techniques for disrupting the alcohol norm and reaching a broader audience
  4. Gain insights from member organizations’ experiences and expertise in implementing communication strategies aimed at challenging existing narratives and reshaping societal attitudes towards alcohol.

15:00 – 15:05 Introduction

15:05 – 15:15 Unveiling Media Narratives

  • 15:05 – 15:10 Pierre Anderson, Movendi International. Examples of alcohol industry-friendly media discourse on alcohol. Through analysis and case studies, Pierre will illustrate how certain narratives are constructed to align with alcohol industry interests, shaping public perceptions and discourse.
  • 15:10 – 15:15 Angélica María Claro and Runa Neely, Movendi International. Examining how the media perpetuates the alcohol norm. Drawing from research and real-world examples, they will highlight how certain narratives reinforce myths about alcohol, contributing to its normalization.

15:15 – 15:55 Member’s experience with shaping the media discourse

  • Labram Musah, VALD, Ghana: Good and bad example of media reporting on alcohol policy;
  • Anna Monteiro, ACT, Brazil: Good and bad examples of media reporting on alcohol harm and alcohol taxation;
  • Kristina Sperkova, Movendi SK, Slovakia: Good an bad examples of media reporting on alcohol, the alcohol-free February challenge, and going alcohol-free; and
  • Dr. Mansi Chopra, HRIDAY, India: Good and bad examples of media reporting on alcohol harm.

15:55 – 16:00 Comments and discussion

16:00- 16:10 Maik Dünnbier, Movendi International. Maik will delve into words and frames aimed at disrupting the alcohol norm and reaching a broader audience. By identifying impactful language and framing techniques, he will provide practical strategies for challenging existing narratives and how to use effective framing to reach more people.
