Launch of Paho’s New Online Courses
This event is organized by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) to promote the free online courses related to alcohol available in the PAHO Virtual Campus for Public Health, and to present the recently released courses: “Estimation of Alcohol Per Capita Consumption in the Americas” and “SAFER initiative: cost-effective policies to reduce alcohol problems”.

About
Building capacity in the alcohol field is essential to strengthen and move forward in the development of research, advocacy and public policies to control alcohol use and its related problems. Based on this premise, the Pan American Health Organization has developed a series of online courses over the years, and it has finalized two new courses that complement the existing ones.
The courses Estimation of Alcohol Per Capita Consumption in the Americas and SAFER initiative: cost-effective policies to reduce alcohol problems were designed to provide knowledge on the tools used by the World Health Organization to support countries reporting data on alcohol use and advancing on cost-effective strategies to reduce the harms caused by alcohol consumption.
These capacity-building initiatives will add up to PAHO’s self-learning virtual courses on alcohol topics. Currently, eight courses have been developed both in English and Spanish (three of them are also available in Portuguese) and over 59,000 people from nearly 60 countries have attended them. They are recognized as highly valuable and have been adopted by individual countries and promoted by other WHO regions.
