CS 20 – Commercial Determinants of Health (CDH) – Major Challenge to Achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Date and time for the concurrent session

Tuesday, March 29, 2022
3.00 – 4.30 PM EST
Introduction
This concurrent session is part of the Consortium of Universities for Global Health Conference 2022. A virtual conference with the title “Healthy People, Healthy Planet, Social Justice“.
Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) account for 42 million deaths globally each year. The etiology of NCDs is complex and influenced by different individual, social, environmental and commercial determinants. As recognized by the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), NCDs are major challenge for sustainable development. While public health analysis has always looked at the power of corporations, it is critically important to acknowledge threats to health from corporate sector, discuss “unhealthy commodities”, “industrial epidemics”, and “corporate practices harmful to health” in more systematic ways, prepare to confront the challenges of multi-sectoral action.
The panel will facilitate discussion on commercial determinants of health – “strategies and approaches used by the private sector to promote products and choices that are detrimental to health” and the need for addressing them in order to accelerate the achievement of SDGs.
