Mindful Sobriety Is Booming

“Mindful Sobriety” is the new health and wellbeing trend, driven by millennials. The concept is simple, combining mindfulness with sobriety to question the relationship with alcohol and ask whether alcohol is really necessary.

Millennials who are more health and wellbeing conscious have been driving the sober or alcohol-free way of life around the world. The trend has been picking up and is becoming increasingly popular.

Big Focus on Alcohol-Free Lifestyle to Start 2020

As people become more aware of what goes into their bodies, mindful sobriety is picking up. People around the globe are more focused on maintaining a healthy mind and body balance which means avoiding harmful substances such as alcohol.

From not sleeping as well, feeling de-motivated, not eating healthy and not being the versions of ourselves on a hangover, it makes sense that more people than ever are choosing to significantly cut down or completely cut out the booze,” says Emily Syphas, the founder of Sober & Social, as per Glamour.

Mindful sobriety comes especially in handy as people are physical distancing due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The World Health Organization has recommended avoiding alcohol during this time. Alcohol is known to weaken the immune system which can make a person more susceptible to the virus and also in developing severe symptoms.

Sobriety during physical distancing

For people in recovery or those struggling to stay sober times of physical distancing can be a challenge. For many the cornerstones of their sobriety are connection and relationships.

Fortunately, the sober community has quickly adapted to online platforms such as zoom to provide support and hold meetings and gatherings for all in sobriety. These meetings provide a platform to connect with others who lead an alcohol-free way of life and fill up the time in self-isolation with meaningful activities.

Before all of this, I always felt like I was too busy to get to meetings or call other sober women. But in the last few days I have been waking up every morning feeling so excited to log on to my Zoom recovery meetings and hear what other sober women are experiencing.

It’s become a really grounding and lifesaving part of my new, weird schedule,” says Britni Bender, a New York-based Pilates instructor, as per Refinery 29.

I’m really grateful to be going through this sober and to have such a strong community that helps me stay calm in chaos,” said a graduate student who has been sober for 4 years, as per, Refinery 29.
