ALCOHOL TAXATION FOR HEALTH AND DEVELOPMENT FOR ALL
Local, national, and global stories that elucidate both the power and potential of alcohol taxation to promote health and development for all and that illustrate how governments are squandering the potential of alcohol taxation, putting lives and economies at risk.
India is an example where alcohol harm burdens society with massive costs but where alcohol taxation is used more for revenue generation than for health promotion. The United States are an example where communities are increasingly demanding action on alcohol harm, through alcohol taxation, but where the Federal Government prioritizes Big Alcohol profits instead with major alcohol tax cuts. Estonia is a case example highlighting how fast positive trends in alcohol use reduction can be lost due to reversals in alcohol taxation and how many lives can be lost as a consequence. And lastly, despite unimpeachable evidence that alcohol taxes can produce substantial health gains by reducing premature mortality while raising government revenues, major UN reports continue to ignore this policy tool.
